I recently hit on an book I just couldn’t get into. And then it happened again. And again. It’s one thing when you’re only 10 or 20 pages in and it just isn’t clicking – like knowing a third date won’t happen. But when I’m a good 50-100 pages in I usually just try to keep going. This time I couldn’t do it.
In an English class a long time ago the teacher told us you need at least 50 pages to decide if you like the book or not. I usually try to make it that far. Usually I do, and I finish it. But recently, I just couldn’t do it. It has been a long time since that has happened to me, and I felt awful about them because these were books I truly believed I would like. And authors I’ve never read before, but felt I should, and thought I would like.
I instead, went looking for what I could finish. And it got me back on a loop of wonderful books. But I still want to try and read all of a book by one those authors I failed with. I may try one of those books again, but in the meantime, I think I’ll try something else each one has written.
So what books could I just not get through?
The movie looked good, but I wanted to read the book first. I struggled immediately. Vote: will give a try again another time.
I love a good mystery, but for so I thought I would actually really enjoy Agatha Christie. Vote: I need to start with a different Christie book.
It hurts my heart that I couldn’t keep going with this. I love Gaiman’s TV writing. Vote: Find a copy of American Gods and start there. I will give up Gaiman.
What have you tried to read that you couldn’t finish lately?
