Remember when everyone last winter was knitting pussy hats? The same women who started that had another idea – what if we do something to welcome refugees here – and let them know some of welcome and want them here. Here’s the key: all the blankets submitted should total the length of the proposed border wall.
The Welcome Blanket was born. A group of friends has been knitting squares for it. While some blankets are on display at the Smart Museum at the University of Chicago, they will later be given to refugee families starting over in America.
This project meant learning some new knitting skills. And who among my friends is a knitter. It’s been fun, but it also helped me figure out how to make a baby blanket.
After several failed attempts for one promised to a friend, I have finally figured out what to do. The downside is that blankets get big – bigger than other things I’ve knit.
