I’ve spent a lot of time in Charleston. It’s one of my favorite cities. Here are a few of my top things to do, along with a few other tips.
1. Nathaniel Russell House
An ongoing restoration project of the Charleston Historical Foundation, the House is a work in progress to restore it to its original 1808 features. It is surrounded by beautiful gardens and sits on the Battery. It is also known for its flying staircase.
2. Barrier Islands
Get away from the city to the barrier islands. Folly Beach, Kiawah Island, and Edisto Island are a short trip away but feel like they’re another world.
3. Fort Sumter
Boats to Fort Sumter leave from the dock right next to the aquarium. A three-hour tour there and back – enjoy the breeze on the boat or the A/C inside. The tour includes guided and self-guided tours.
4. A Swamp Tour
There are a couple swap tours adjacent to plantations. Or go out on your own, to Santee State Park. Get a glimpse of local wildlife, and the different plants living in the swampland of the low country.
5. Gardens and Graveyards
The South does love their gardens. Most historical homes have the bonus of incredible gardens. The church graveyards are just as beautiful. Go for a wander.
